Whether you need martial arts mats for a small grappling area or large dojo facility, there a important differences to consider when choosing between EVA jigsaw mats and other types of martial arts mats such as condensed foam vinyl mats and roll-out mats.
Vinyl covered condensed foam mats are traditionally used for Judo and floor-based MMA styles and are commonly only found in a 40mm thickness. Although providing excellent comfort and protection, this tends to make them heavy and hard to manage. EVA foam jigsaw mats are much lighter and are available in varying depths from 20mm, up to 40mm. For upright forms of MMA, such as Karate, Taekwondo and Kickboxing, 20mm jigsaw mats are ideal. For wrestling, grappling and floor-based MMA styles such as Judo and Ju Jitsu, involving throws and take-downs, and 40mm jigsaw mats offer more protection.
Condensed foam vinyl mats can be extremely heavy and are usually held together using concealed Velcro strips. Whereas they are extremely good cushioning falls and throws, they do not provide very good support when upright, causing the legs to work harder to maintain control. EVA foam jigsaw mats manufactured using non-porous, closed-cell EVA foam. This structure adds stability to the mats, making them more rigid than vinyl mats and much more supportive under foot.
Due to their condensed foam nature, vinyl mats are material intensive, which makes them heavy and difficult to manoeuvre, especially in large sizes. The EVA foam used in our jigsaw mats is called closed-cell, which consists of tiny bubbles, which trap air in the mats, making them extremely light for their size and easier to lift and store.
Of course, choosing the right mat for your needs is paramount, but we understand home users and independent clubs have tight budgets, so cost is certainly a factor. Although usually very good quality, vinyl covered PVC foam filled martial arts mats can be extremely expensive. Single 1m size mats can be priced anywhere between £30 to £80, with the large-area roll out mats often retailing over £200. This can make them prohibitive to those on a budget. 20mm EVA jigsaw mats are certainly more competitively priced and can be found anywhere between £10 and £30. However, there are varying degrees of quality to be found, so make sure you get a sample before you commit to buying.
